FAQs on Antigen Rapid Test (ART) Self-Test
A comprehensive guide on all the frequently asked questions that are discussed and perhaps commonly misunderstood about the ART Self administered Test procedures, results and next steps.

Q1  What are Antigen Rapid Test (ART) Self-Test Kits ?
ART screens for SARS-CoV-2, a virus that causes COVID-19. It is a quick screening tool to pick up any possible infection early. The test is easy to do and safe, taking only less than 20 minutes.

Q2 What is an Antigen Rapid Test (ART) and when do I need it?
A:

The Antigen Rapid Test (ART) screens for the SARS-CoV-2, a virus that causes COVID-19. It is quick, easy and safe. Testing takes less than 20 minutes. If you are worried that you may have COVID-19, you can self-test at home with an ART kit to put your mind at ease

As Singapore transit to becoming a COVID resilient nation, regular testing is an important part of our strategy to detect cases early and curb transmission.

Q3

Are the ART results accurate?

A:

ART is faster and less intrusive than a Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) test. Members of public can test themselves easily with these test kits.

ARTs are fairly accurate, with a sensitivity (ability to identify patients with the disease) of about 80% for cases with higher viral loads and a specificity (ability to identify patients without the disease) range of 97-100%.

Q4 Will the ART be painful?
A:

The test is easy to do and safe. You may experience some discomfort, but the swabs should not be painful.

To perform the ART, you will need to insert the swab stick approximately 2cm into the nostril. These swabs are shallower and less intrusive than swabs taken for PCR tests.

Q5 Is frequent ART swabbing harmful to me?
A:

Frequent swabbing will do no harm. ART swabs are inserted at around 2cm into the nostril. However, if you have had recent facial surgery or frequent nose bleeds, you are advised to visit a licensed ART provider to have a professional perform the ART for you.

If you are feeling unwell, please seek medical attention at your nearest Swab and Send Home (SASH) clinic. Please do not perform any ART self-testing if you are unwell.

Q6  How Much is a

FAQs on Positive Antigen Rapid Tests

What you need to know if your Antigen Rapid Test result is positive?

Q8. What should I do if my Antigen Rapid Test (ART) is positive?

If you have no symptoms, self-isolate in your room and monitor your health. Repeat the ART after 72 hours.

  • If negative, resume normal activities.
  • If positive, continue to self-isolate and repeat ART at least one day apart. Resume normal activities when you test negative.

If you have symptoms of acute respiratory infection, for example, fever, cough, or flu, visit your nearest Swab and Send Home (SASH) clinic

Q9. Should I get a PCR test if my ART is positive?

There is no need to do so unless you:

  • Have symptoms of acute respiratory infection.
  • Are under Quarantine Order/Stay Home Notice/Health Risk Warning
  • Work in healthcare, eldercare, or pre-schools and primary schools.
  • Attend pre-school or primary school.
  • Are above 80 years old.

Q10. What if I repeat the ART before 72 hours and it is negative?

Continue to self-isolate. Resume normal activities if ART is negative after 72 hours from the first test.

Q11. If my ART is positive, how should I protect my family?

  • Self-isolate in your room. Wear a mask if you must leave your room.
  • Practise good personal hygiene.
  • For shared bathrooms, wipe the surfaces after every use.
  • Keep your home well-ventilated.

Q12. What if there are vulnerable persons at home, such as the pregnant or the elderly?

Do not interact with them. Your family should take precautions, for example, wear masks and practise good personal hygiene.

Q13. What if I run out of ART kits?

You can buy them online here in bulk

Q14. What should I do if the ART result is invalid?

An invalid ART result means that the test was incorrectly done or that the test kit was faulty. Do re-read the test instructions and repeat the process using a new test kit.

Q15. If my ART is positive, can my household members leave home for errands/school/work?

During this period, your household members should stay home as much as possible. If they need to go out, especially to places with vulnerable persons or where there is a large number of people, they should self-test with an ART and ensure that they test negative before going out.
